Marketing Psychology: Understanding Your Client's Mind

Have you ever wondered why some marketing strategies work like magic and others don't work at all? There's a reason for it.

Marketing psychology is the process of understanding your clients, yourself, and how to connect the dots in the most meaningful way possible.

Let's go through an exercise. By the end of this exercise, you'll have a much better understanding of how to market yourself or your company. Some of this might sound weird, but trust me.

Grab a pen and paper, or use the notes app on your phone.

Your Clients:

Who are your clients? How old are they usually? Where do they live? What are their hobbies? What kind of media do they consume (movies, tv shows, books, magazines, social media, etc.)? What kind of jobs do they have? What's their education level?

Write down any and all information you know about majority of your clients.

Your Client's Challenges:

Every business solves challenges. A lawyer solves the challenge of going through a legal battle. A marketing goes through the challenge of promoting a company and helping growth. What challenge does your business solve?

What are your clients going through that leads them to your business? If they don't find someone like you to help them, what could happen? If that happens, what could it lead to?

By asking yourself these questions, you can really understand how your business can help your clients.

For example, clients usually come to me because they're looking to grow their company. If they don't find someone like me to help with their marketing, then sales can stay stagnant or even go down. If that happens long enough, the company might go out of business.

Your Client's Attention

Where is your client day to day? I mean that physically, mentally, and emotionally.

By understanding where their attention is, you can better chose marketing channels that are effective.

For example, my clients tend to spend time looking to grow their business. So they might be listening to podcasts, attending networking events, active on LinkedIn, and more. Since I'm aware of this, I can save a ton of time, energy, and money by avoiding less effective channels, like TikTok (in my example).

You

Here we go. We talked about your client and now it's time to talk about you!

What makes you special? What makes your company unique? What can you say that would be hard for others to copy?

You might be in business for over 30 years. That's impressive!

You might have a 5 star rating on google. Awesome!

You might be family owned and operated!

There's so many other options, like speedy service, flexible scheduling, world class customer service, and more!

Summary

Once you can answer all of these questions, you're on the right path to effective marketing strategy. This is marketing strategy at it's core. Everything you do with your marketing should stem from the answers to these questions. And this can change over time, so be sure to come back and do this exercise again in the future!
